American Attack on Caracas Stokes Concerns of Potential Greenland Annexation.
Recent American military action in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have ignited worry regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the vast landmass following the operations in South America.
Provocative Messages and Official Backlash
Merely a short time following the commencement of the Caracas campaign, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word message: "COMING."
This overt suggestion to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and firm criticism from Denmark's officials.
"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US collaborate to guarantee security in the North."
The diplomat further highlighted that Denmark had substantially increased its defence spending recently, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we demand complete respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.
Political Moves and Geopolitical Interests
The tensions were additionally complicated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the president, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."
After the military action in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's decisive move, connecting it to the wider "fight against narcotics."
Ever since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It already hosts the northernmost US air base.
Leaving the Door Open to Force
In a notable television interview, the leader refused to rule out the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.
He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."
Mounting Tensions and Local Opposition
In response to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Danish security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."
The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."
Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is also little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to declare sovereignty for over a decade.
Analyst Assessment: A Plausible Threat?
Some experts are now reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank analyst focusing in military analysis conceded she had previously discounted the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."
"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
