An Generosity of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
