Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
